Evaluating Your Website's AI Agent Compatibility: A New Standard for the Web

The Web's Next Evolution: Speaking to AI Agents

Throughout its history, the web has adapted to new technologies—first to web browsers, then to search engines. Now, it must learn to communicate with artificial intelligence agents. To help site owners prepare for this shift, Cloudflare has launched isitagentready.com, a tool that assesses how optimized a website is for AI agents. Additionally, a new dataset in Cloudflare Radar tracks global adoption of agent standards across the internet.

The Current State of Agent Readiness

How prepared is the web today? Not very, according to Cloudflare's analysis. By scanning the 200,000 most visited domains (excluding redirects, ad-servers, and tunneling services), Radar measured adoption of key agent standards. The results highlight both gaps and opportunities:

Key Findings from the Scan

  • robots.txt files are nearly universal (78% of sites), but most are written for traditional crawlers, not AI agents.
  • Content Signals—declaring AI usage preferences in robots.txt—appear on only 4% of sites. This is a new but growing standard.
  • Markdown content negotiation (serving text/markdown on Accept: text/markdown) passes on just 3.9% of sites.
  • Emerging standards like MCP Server Cards and API Catalogs (RFC 9727) appear on fewer than 15 sites in the entire dataset.

These numbers show that while adoption is early, there is immense opportunity for sites to distinguish themselves by implementing agent-friendly standards. Cloudflare Radar updates this data weekly, accessible via the Data Explorer or Radar API.

Using the New Tool to Score Your Site

To see how your site measures up, visit isitagentready.com and enter your URL. You'll receive an Agent Readiness score along with a detailed audit. This format—providing actionable feedback—has proven effective in driving adoption of web standards, much like Google Lighthouse did for performance and security.

What the Tool Checks

The audit guides site owners on key areas:

  • Guiding agents on how to authenticate
  • Controlling what content agents can see
  • Specifying the format agents receive content in
  • Managing payment interactions for agent access

By following the suggestions, you can ensure your site works seamlessly with AI agents, making interactions faster and more cost-effective.

Leading by Example: Cloudflare’s Documentation Overhaul

Cloudflare practices what it preaches. The company recently overhauled its Developer Documentation to become one of the most agent-friendly documentation sites. This redesign allows AI tools to answer questions faster and at significantly lower cost, demonstrating the practical benefits of agent optimization.

How to Get Started and What the Future Holds

If your site scores low on agent readiness, don't worry—it's early days. Start by implementing robots.txt entries that explicitly address AI agents, then explore content negotiation and API catalogs. As standards evolve, being an early adopter can give you a competitive edge. Check your score today at isitagentready.com and monitor global progress via Cloudflare Radar's AI Insights page.

The web is entering a new era. Make sure your site speaks the language of AI agents.
